From Exodus 16 we read the story of God’s provision of manna & quail. God tests Israel’s obedience through their Sabbath keeping; will they trust God to provide enough food on the sixth day for the Sabbath day as well. Our passaged teaches us that the God we love is a God who provides and yet, also, that we must not seek God only for his benefits, but obey him. Likewise, Israel’s time in the desert provides a model for difficult times in our lives; the desert has the potential for great good, but also can be a place of failure and punishment if we don’t trust God.
