Sermon Summary

Ephesians 1:3-14

3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace 8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding, 9 he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10 to be put into effect when the times reach their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

11 In him we were also chosen,  having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

What does it mean to bear fruit, walk in the Spirit, and behave like Jesus Christ?

We all need to know what we’re doing, where we’re going, and how we’ll get there.

Why do you want me to do x, y, or z in my life, God?

Ultimately we would say that God has A GOAL that has been around for a long time; it is mysterious in nature and is bigger than you or me.

Look at Eph 1 v4-5, the purpose of God here for you and for me is to redeem us. He wants to make you his own. His purpose is to adopt you and lavish love on you. His purpose is to express all his love for you in his Son. He wants you to be free, and forgiven, and made right. He wants you to know how he feels about you. He doesn’t want to hide this purpose; rather he wants to reveal it to you. His purpose has the end result of glorifying himself; and this purpose is accomplished in uniting all things under Christ.

  1. God lived amongst us
  2. Jesus will come again and all things will be subject to his rule.
  3. God’s Spirit is alive in us. We are the body of Christ. See Col 1:15-20

He is the head of the church. There is only one purpose of God. It is to save you and place you in his body, to glorify him.

Finally the purpose of God ends in his kingdom as a reality. It is heaven. It is the inheritance we are promised. God’s purpose for saving you is rooted in his plan for you, it is continued in your participation and growth in his church, and it is fulfilled in your receiving an inheritance “to the PRAISE of HIS GLORY” (v12 & 14).  We are here to love, serve and glorify God together.
