Week 24: LOVE                                     For Sunday July 26, 2009

John 13:34 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

A. How well do we / you follow this command?

B. Is it easy to honor others above yourself?

Romans 12: 9-10 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.

A. How can love be sincere?

B. How are the apologetics of hating evil? How can you love a sinner and hate the sin, when they are so intertwined?

C. Is it easy to honor others above yourself? Why / why not?

Ephesians 4:2-3 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

A. How important is this verse? Why?

B. What happens when every effort is made, and the “bond of peace” is still strained?

1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death.

A. How can love be life?

B. Are you alive? Always?

1 John 3:17-18 If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of GOD be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

A. What is the correlation between love and pity?

B. How do you love with your actions? How do you love with your words?

C. Compare this verse to the themes in the Epistle of James. The tongue may be powerful, but how should we use it?

Colossians 3:12-14 Therefore, as GOD’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the LORD forgave you. And over all these virtues, put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

A. Why is love the best of these? Why not joy or thanksgiving or another?

Luke 10:27 He answered, “Love the LORD your GOD with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.

A. Heart: feelings, emotion, core being, lifeblood.

B. Soul: eternal self, breath, passion

C. Mind: control center, logic, brain, thinking, focus

D. Strength: body, character, attributes, skills

B. How can we put love first? How can we achieve this unity?
