Sunday 17th Singing Room after the service

It’s that time again to kick off 2010 in song! Come to the singing room and enjoy some melodious tunes, good times and good people. Cost will be dependent on the number of people but shouldn’t be too much. Last time, we had 10 people go to a No-rae bang just near church and everyone got into the swing of things! Hope you can join us this weekend.

Every month we have an activity to have fun, fellowship, frivolity and form firm friendships for the time that we are together in Korea. If you have any great ideas about what we could do, let us know at church or by email.

God bless you all!

Orphanage visit

We will be going to Shin Saeng won Orphanage this Saturday 5th Dec and are meeting at 1:45 at Ansim Subway.  The place is about 5-10 minutes walk.  If you have any questions or would like to play/interact with the kids for a couple of hours, please contact Brandon on 010-2231-1785.  Also we will be having a special offering for the orphanage kids over the next 2 weeks and there will be a box at the rear of church for donations to provide for them at Christmas time.

Advent

This week we started looking at Advent and this will lead up to Christmas so here are some details below:

What is advent?

  • It is the four-week period leading up to Christmas
  • It is a time of preparation for the coming of the Christ Child
  • The season is also a preparation for the Second Coming of Christ

What is the focus of advent week?

  • Celebrate the first Advent of Christ’s birth.
  • Anticipate the Second Advent of Christ the King’s return.

What is the meaning of advent wreath?

  • Circle shape of the wreath – God has no beginning or end.
  • Color green of the wreath – We have hope in eternal life.
  • Blue candles-Royalty of King Jesus, repent and turn from the darkness of sin.
  • Pink candle – Awake out of darkness into the celebration of life through Jesus.
  • White candle or Christ candle – Jesus is true God and true man and this is the heart of the season.

How will we celebrate advent at Dongshin

  • Each Sunday for the next 4 weeks we will:
  • Read the Scriptures for the Christmas story.
  • Light the candles.
  • Read a prayer together.

Luke 2: 1-6 Life Application Study Bible
1. At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire
2. (This was the first census taken when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
3. All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census.
4. And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He travleed there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee.
5. He took with him Mary, who was now obviously pregnant.
6. And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born.

Advent Prayer
Emmanuel, Jesus Christ,
desire of every nation,
Savior of all people,
come and dwell among us

God bless everyone

Thanksgiving is in the history books

A November 22nd Thanksgiving may be unusual for some but for the people who attended the annual dinner, it was a great night with heaps of turkey, dessert, friends and frivolity! We had a special appearance by Ebenezer Scrooge’s cousin – Jebenezer Stooge who was transformed by the Thanksgiving angel from hating to loving Thanksgiving. The angel then said

Well I wish it was just that easy to change someone’s attitude but God gave us free will to choose how we respond to situations. Sometimes we don’t like or hate what God is doing and we take it out on other people. Sometimes we just don’t care about what other people are going through and we don’t recognise the effort required to get things done. But then, there are times when we love our life, we are grateful for family, friends and the blessings from God. So how you are feeling towards God? Are you hurting and feeling bad or are you feeling indifferent that God doesn’t see your struggle or are you feeling safe and secure in God’s love that whatever happens, God is in control and wants the best for you.

We have added some photos at the link below and also we thank God for his amazing provision and putting the right people in the right places (the workers) to make the dinner happen and be able to celebrate with one another.

Thanksgiving Dinner 22 Nov (after church)

It’s happening again, the massive, monstrous, mega, mighty, marvellous meal of the year that your stomach can only take once.  We are planning to have the dinner after church and will need people to help with setup (decorating the room and setting out tables and chairs), cooking (you don’t need to be a master chef) and cleaning up (arrgh the dishes) afterwards.  Please invite your work colleagues and we will have a signup sheet to get an idea of numbers for catering purposes.  We hope you can join us for a wonderful time of giving thanks not only for our personal blessings but for our spiritual blessings.

16th Church Picnic

The picnic was held at Bong Mu Park near Palgongsan and was fantastic!  We had hotdogs and hamburgers on the grill (Andy was top chef), great salads, chocolate brownie just to name a few.  There were 65 people in attendance and we had  a lucky number draw – 30 people took home prizes! After that, we had some Bible trivia and the scholars were out there choosing true or false to the statements such as the oldest person in the bible was 969 years old – yes it’s true.

Later some of the lads played soccer and there was a lot of fun and laughter.  God gave us great weather, perfect location and awesome fellowship.

If you have any ancedotes to pass on or photos, please forward them to my email address kprodger@yahoo.com

Once again, another legendary Dongshin Event, don’t miss out on the next one!

Aug 2 Sermon James 3:9-12

Summary (apologies for the delay)

James points out to us the glaring inconsistencies between what we say we believe and what we say, and even what we believe. All of this is revealed by a tiny little thing called the tongue

  1. The tongue reveals deep seated inconsistencies in the lives of every person.
  2. The inconsistencies revealed by the tongue go to the very source of the problem
  3. The inconsistencies revealed by the tongue must be reconciled

1. The inconsistency revealed by our tongues is quite bluntly and evidently put to us by James in Verse 9. He says you’re praising God one minute, and cursing people you know the next.

2. vs. 11 and 12 together as we seek the root, orsource of the problem James puts to us today.

“Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.”

3. James even asks the question for us.

He says, can a fig tree grow olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. How can there be reconciliation between a man and his wife, a child and his parents, a person and their God?

A fig tree cannot produce olives. How might we make it produce olives?

What if we were to rename it? We could take a sign and hang it on the branches or even nail it to the trunk. We could brand it into the bark. It would read, “OLIVE TREE”. Would that make the fig tree produce olives?

We see people try to do this. They try to call something or some group Christian when it’s not true at all. Americans answer in polls that they are 81 % Christian. This doesn’t make the claim any more true about their lives.

The tongue speaks from the heart. It reveals a grave inconsistency in our lives that must be mended spiritually, or we will die in our sin. God looks on the heart. He sees your heart. He knows your thoughts. How will you respond to his gracious invitation to be forgiven for how you speak to and of your brothers and sisters in Christ and indeed all of his creatures? There is life changing grace to be found in Christ today.

Sunday 26th Small group questions
